The Environmental Permitting and Industry Unit is carrying out a permitting programme as part of the implementation of Legal Notice 22 of 2009 Waste Management (Management of Waste from Extractive Waste and Backfill) Regulations that transposes Directive 2006/21/EC. This legal notice controls the waste that is generated from the extraction of resource from local quarries and the backfill of this waste. All the quarries that are extracting resource on the Maltese Islands fall under this regulation and are required to apply for an environmental permit to comply with this regulation and other legislation that control this sector.

The permitting programme is spread over a number of phases to facilitate a smooth and gradual implementation of this new legal requirement. For this purpose a survey of all the quarries on the Maltese Islands was carried out and all the operating quarries identified. These quarries were grouped in different clusters based on the geographical location to ease the permitting process. In the coming weeks a meeting will be organised for all the quarry owners to explain the requirements of this regulation, the obligations of the operators and a description of the permitting process.
