VOX POP: SPOTLIGHT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the sustainable use of land is one of its most pressing priorities. Unsustainable development will ultimately affect quality of life in rural, urban and coastal zones of the Maltese islands. OUTLOOK speaks to four individuals who share their thoughts on utilising the land more efficiently and promoting sustainable development throughout the country.

Simon Amato, Paola
What initiatives could be taken to use land more efficiently?
Land could be used more efficiently by offering more open spaces and recreational areas such as parks and camping areas to be used by the Maltese public.
How could sustainable development be promoted in the Maltese islands?
I think the Government should continue to invest and create initiatives to further encourage the use of alternative energy generating technologies such as solar panels.

Rodney Zahra, Paola
What initiatives could be taken to use land more efficiently?
I think the Government should see to irregular buildings and building methods. The Authorities should plan extensively in order to avoid irreversible problems from surfacing at a later stage.
How could sustainable development be promoted in the Maltese islands?
This could be done by means of a public communication campaign with the help of the media and billboards. It is important to communicate that promoting sustainable development will not only prove beneficial to our generation but also to those of the future.

Marica Saliba, Swatar
What initiatives could be taken to use land more efficiently?
I think a good idea could be to utilise a similar method as is done in Asia whereby debris and waste can be used to extend the land’s surface area.
How could sustainable development be promoted in the Maltese islands?
More rigid rules and regulations should be in place.

Marlene Camilleri, Gzira
What initiatives could be taken to use land more efficiently?
Rather than building horizontally and occupying a large area of land, buildings could utilise more air space and increase floors by building vertically. This however could impact the character of our villages and therefore development should be well planned and take into consideration all the necessary elements.
How could sustainable development be promoted in the Maltese islands?
Sustainable development can  be promoted through education which must start at an early age. However it is also important to be sensitive and specific to the requirements of the particular area where a development is being planned.
