VOX POP: SHOULD HERITAGE BUILDING BE SCHEDULED

Should Heritage Buildings be Scheduled?
A Scheduled property is property which is deemed to contain heritage significance and therefore legally protected through legislation to be included on the Malta Scheduled Property Register. Outlook asks four individuals whether they consider scheduling to be positive.

Silvan Attard
Do you consider the scheduling of buildings to be an advantage or a disadvantage? Why?
I think that it is positive, as it keeps the style of a locality or a place uniform.
Could you suggest a solution to facilitate maintenance problems of scheduled buildings?
As a solution, I would recommend more awareness to the general public.

Andre Xuereb
Do you consider the scheduling of buildings to be an advantage or a disadvantage? Why?
I think that it makes sense if it is used sensibly.
Could you suggest a solution to facilitate maintenance problems of scheduled buildings?
I think that more awareness is a good solution particularly to the older generation.

Luke Vincenti
Do you consider the scheduling of buildings to be an advantage or a disadvantage? Why?
I think it’s a bit of both – but it is definitely a planning tool that should be used.
Could you suggest a solution to facilitate maintenance problems of scheduled buildings?
Well, I think that it goes back to the original Valletta solution, where if you are not capable of keeping a building in a certain way, the Government or an entity in charge will take over the property and you are no longer given the right to take care of it.

Ana Attard
Do you consider the scheduling of buildings to be an advantage or a disadvantage? Why?
Well, I am not against having old buildings next to modern old houses, but it would very much depend on the situation at hand.
Could you suggest a solution to facilitate maintenance problems of scheduled buildings?
The one solution I would suggest is coming up with a valuable way to reuse empty spaces.
