LARGE ILLEGAL STRUCTURE DEMOLISHED AT L-AHRAX TAL-MELLIEHA
A large structure, which was illegally built in L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha, right along the cliff edge, was demolished by enforcement officers of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA).
The illegal structure consisted of two rooms and had been built government land in an area that was scheduled under MEPA’s official list as an area of High Landscape Value, Ecological Importance and also a Special Area of Conservation of International Importance.
In another case of illegal development, the Authority was stopped from taking further action within the same location by a Court prohibitory injunction which was presented by the contravenor’s lawyer. The Authority is awaiting the Court’s decision and, should the injunction be turned down, will take action to demolish this illegal structure.
In 2010 the unit issued a total of 627 Enforcement Notices, 512 were issued for illegal development in Malta while 115 were issued in Gozo.
From the total number issued 318 cases were in an Outside Development Zone while 309 were within the Development Boundaries.
450 Enforcement Notices were closed, 403 in Malta and 47 in Gozo.
In 2010, the Authority received 7746 compliance certificate applications and processed 7771, nearly 30 compliance certificates per working day.
Removal of illegal development
188 and 20 enforcement cases were closed in Malta and Gozo respectively after the illegalities were removed by the owner. 74 cases were in ODZ areas while 134 were in Development Zones.
61 direct action operations were carried out by the Authority with the assistance of the Police Force.
