Expert Mission on Waste Management in Bulgaria

The Twinning project ‘Strengthening the administrative capacity for practical implementation of legislation in the fields of electric/electronic equipment and batteries and accumulators at national and regional level in Bulgaria’ is financed by the Transition Facility Programme for Bulgaria, 2007. This programme aims to strengthen the Bulgarian administration to enable it to fully comply with the requirements of the EU Acquis.

The overall objective of this project is to prevent environmental pollution through the implementation of legislation in the fields of electrical and electronic equipment and battery/accumulators at a national and regional level in Bulgaria. The project is led by the Austrian Environment Agency (UBA). MEPA's input was requested to suggest improvements to the permitting system for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)/batteries treatment facilities in Bulgaria. A 4-day mission was carried out by one of MEPA’s experts at the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Waters in January 2010. Further input may be requested from MEPA as the project progresses.

Within MEPA, this initiative is coordinated by the EU and Multilateral Affairs Unit in collaboration with the Environmental Permitting & Industry Unit.
