Acquisition of Air Monitoring Equipment

The project "Acquisition of Air Monitoring equipment to comply with EU requirements" was financed out of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This is one of EU Structural Funds under the Single Programming Document 2004 - 2006 programme.

This project facilitated compliance with the Air Quality Acquis requirements by extending the national air quality monitoring network through the acquisition of two air monitoring stations and training of staff in the use of this equipment.  The air monitoring stations were essential to enable the function of the national air monitoring programme, which prior to this project consisted of only two stations.

The stations are currently monitoring the air for a range of pollutants that are potentially harmful to the human health. Data generated from the stations will be used over the years to develop plans and programmes aiming to reduce air pollution.  Moreover, online real time data is being made available on MEPA’s website, thus also contributing to the availability of environmental information.

The total budget for this project was €500,000, of which 73% was financed by the EU and a further 27% was provided by the Maltese Government.

The equipment was delivered and commissioned in the 2nd quarter of 2006. The two air monitoring stations were installed in Zejtun and Msida.

Within MEPA, the project was coordinated by the Waste, Air, Radiation, Noise and Chemicals Unit, with the assistance of the International Projects Team of the EU and Multilateral Affairs Unit. More information about the Air Quality Monitoring Programme can be found by clicking here.
