The project "Capacity Building to draw up and implement the first River Basin Management Plan for Malta as required under the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC" was financed from the Transition Facility Programme for Malta. This funding programme aims to strengthen the Maltese administration to enable it to fully comply with the requirements of the EU Acquis.
This project was implemented jointly by MEPA and the Malta Resources Authority (MRA), and had a total budget of € 248,700.
The overall objective of this project was to achieve compliance with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC pertaining to the preparation of the first River Basin Management Plan (RBMP).
More specifically, the project resulted in the finalization of the first RBMP; finalization of RBMP public consultation, communications and stakeholder involvement strategy; and training to MEPA and MRA staff in technical aspects related to the development and implementation of the RBMP.
This project was implemented through a Twinning Light contract which was signed in December 2008 and concluded in September 2009. Following a Twinning Light circulation, this contract was awarded to France.
Within MEPA, this project was coordinated by the Climate Change and Marine Policy Unit, with assistance from the International Projects Team of the EU and Multilateral Affairs Unit.
This project has been realised with the financial assistance of the European Union
