The project "Regional Project for the development of marine and coastal protected areas in the Mediterranean region (MedMPA)" was funded under the Short and Medium Term Action Plan (SMAP).  SMAP is a framework programme of action for the protection of the Mediterranean environment, within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

The aim of the MedMPA project was the designation of a Marine Protected Area from Rdum Majjiesa to Ras ir-Raheb.

This project resulted in the elaboration of a management plan for the stretch of coast situated in the northwest of Malta. The plan provided the means for species and habitat protection; control of activities; scientific research and catered for education and public participation.

MedMPA had a total budget for MEPA of €12,500 and it was concluded in January 2005.

Within MEPA, the project was coordinated by the Ecosystems Management Unit with assistance from the EU and Multilateral Affairs Unit. More information on this Marine Protected Area can be found in the following link
