Il-Qala ta' Santa MarijaThe saline marshland and sand dune area at Il-Qala ta’ Santa Marija hosts a good riparian coastal woodland population of the African Tamarisk (Bruk) and a small population of the Chaste Tree (Siġra tal-virgi). Both species are rare in their native status in the wild.
The area has been protected since 1996, and is declared as a Natura 2000 site, an Area of Ecological Importance, a Site of Scientific Importance, a Bird Sanctuary, a Nature Reserve, a Special Area of Conservation of International Importance and a Special Protection Area.

MEPA declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on the 24th May 2011, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
