FREE SUNDAY HERITAGE AND BIODIVERSITY TOURS TO RE-START THIS OCTOBER
Following the positive feedback MEPA received from the monthly Sunday Biodiversity tours it ran between October 2010 and April 2011, the Authority has decided to re-start these tours, with the addition of a separate monthly heritage tour to compliments its educational and activities programme.
The Wied il-Hoxt/il-Maqluba Biodiversity Tour
Start from October this year, the Authority will be organising a monthly biodiversity tour in the Wied il-Hoxt/il-Maqluba area. The area, which is know for its rich biodiversity facets, the public will be able to learn, experience and appreciate the natural beauty of this Natura 2000 site. Wied il-hoxt, located between Wied Babu and Ghar Lapsi holds important garigue communities, and leads to the spectacular cliffs of the area, which include a good number of unique, endemic species. The tour will end off at Il-Maqluba which is a doline, housing interesting macquis and reed communities, as well as one of the oldest known stands for the Maltese national tree.
Mgarr/Zebbiegh Heritage Tour
A series of monthly heritage tour will also be organised this time around. This tour which will cover cultural, agricultural and natural heritage, will be carried out in the Mgarr/Zebbiegh area. In Bingemma, the public can appreciate a mixture of both natural and cultural features including the Chapel overlooking the valley, cave-dwellings and possibly the most recognisable stretch of the Victoria Lines. Moving onto the area known as Skorba the public will be taken to a Megalithic Temple which has historical features and examples of habitation from the earliest periods of Malta's Neolithic culture, which are very rare in the Maltese Islands. The tour will be concluded at Għajn Tuffieha Bay, which contains various natural features such as sand dune remnants and coastal cliffs
