The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has issued a stop order on certain activities being carried out by Mediterranean Offshore Bunkering Co. Ltd (MOBC), until the management of this facility rectifies the situation and installs the required mitigation measures.

MEPA is holding discussions with the management of MOBC to determine the way forward, given the unacceptability of air pollution resulting from oil berthing facilities.

MEPA has instructed MOBC to desist from carrying out loading and unloading of fuel from and to barges and tankers, any tank to tank transfers and heating of tanks containing fuel.   

The stop order has been issued in view of the potential environment risks and nuisances caused by odours generated from such activities.
