Posted on: 15/09/2009

DA_TorriabjadThe Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) started removing rooms and boundary walls that were illegally developed by squatters in the vicinity of the Torri L-Abjad, limits of Mellieha.

The Authority also removed a number of white goods and furniture that were found in the illegal rooms that were also used for recreational trapping activities. The site, which is within the buffer zone of the scheduled Torri L-Abjad and military battery, is a Special Area of Conservation and an Area of Ecological Importance.

The illegal structures started being demolished by personnel from the direct action team within MEPA with the assistance of the ALE police.

The Lands Department which co-operated with MEPA in this initiative, will be transferring the Torri l-Abjad to the Mellieha Local Council.

The Authority over the coming days will continue with its operations in the area.
