The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) board refused the planning application for the reclamation and extension of Terminal 1 quay at the Malta Freeport in Birzebbugia for overriding public interest.

During the public hearing the MEPA board approved a permit for dredging works to be carried out to enable the Malta Freeport to remain competitive and accommodate larger shipping vessels to manoeuvre and berth at the Freeport.
