Demolition of the illegal building in Mdina Road, Zebbug, continued today after the initial work was carried out yesterday. It is estimated that the work will be finished by the end of this week.
The removal of the illegalities was met with great hostility by the owners of the building and it was only with the help of the Police and the Armed Forces that MEPA officials could ensure that the law was implemented and the illegality removed. Three people were arraigned in court following the disturbances and members of the police force had to be treated for injuries sustained in the scuffles.
Commenting to the press, MEPA Chairman Mr. Andrew Calleja said that the Authority deplored this sort of behaviour and said that MEPA will always do its best not only to ensure the safety of the workers but also to guarantee that the law is respected so that the people get the environment they deserve. He commended the MEPA officials for carrying out their duty in an exemplary manner in spite of all the harassment and intimidation they were subjected to. He also thanked the Police Force and the Armed Forces for the support they gave in the whole operation.
