Nature Permitting

In order to safeguard natural heritage, a number of areas and species are afforded varying degrees of protection through national and international legislation. In view of this, a permitting system is in place in relation to protected areas and protected species, as well as in relation to trade (including CITES) and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Permitting procedures are initiated upon the submission of a properly filled-in application form, accompanied by the necessary information and documentation, together with fees where applicable. Any application should reach MEPA at a specified time-frame prior to when the consent to carry out an activity is required; this depends on the type of application. Permits are issued provided that any endeavour is not deemed to threaten biodiversity.

Below are the relevant application forms for the different types of permits required through legislation. It is of utmost importance that all sections of the application form are appropriately filled in and all necessary documentation included. Processing of application forms cannot be completed if there is lack of information.

Application forms can be filled in and submitted to:
nature.permitting@mepa.org.mt or to: Nature Permitting, Ecosystems Management Unit, Malta Environment and Planning Authority, St. Francis Ravelin, Floriana, FRN 1230.
