International Funding and Projects

These pages are dedicated to international funding for environmental projects.

Being a national land-use planning and environmental regulator, MEPA is responsible for the implementation of over 200 regulations, directives and other legal instruments in the field of the environment.

MEPA has long recognized that EU and international funds have the potential to act as a key lever for achieving the aims of regulating development and safeguarding environment.

Since its establishment in 2002, MEPA has been successful at securing funds from the EU and international sources for projects that support the achievement of its business objectives.  Within MEPA, the International Projects Team of the EU & Multilateral Affairs Unit (EUMA) is responsible for the coordination of internationally funded projects. For more information on these projects, please follow this link below: Internationally Funded Projects at MEPA

Integrating Environment in Economic Development Programmes

As part of its function as a national environmental agency, MEPA also works to encourage the incorporation of environmental objectives within all economic development programmes. If you would like to learn more about this function of MEPA, please follow this link below: Integration of Environmental Objectives in Economic Development Programmes

International funding opportunities for environment

Every funding programme has its own specific rules and procedures concerning administrative and financial management of projects, reporting guidelines and timeframes for implementation. If you would like to learn more about some of the main EU and international funds of relevance to the environment sector in Malta, please follow this link: International funding opportunities for environment

Clean Development Mechanism

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the so-called “flexible mechanisms” of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol. MEPA is the designated National Authority responsible for participation in CDM in Malta, and if you would like to learn more about this function and opportunities offered by CDM, please follow this link: Clean Development Mechanism
