The Maltese National Biosafety Clearing House was set up in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Malta ratified the the Protocol on the 5th of January 2007. The Protocol seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology.
