The CIRCLE project was funded by the 6th Framework Programme, which is the European Community framework programme for research, technological development and demonstration for the period 2002 – 2006.

The aim of CIRCLE was to coordinate European research on climate change impact assessment and adaptation to facilitate the research needed by European and national decision makers to design effective yet economically efficient and feasible adaptation strategies.

CIRCLE consisted of a consortium of different partners and observers from all across Europe.  MEPA joined the project as an observer in 2008.  MEPA contributed its expertise in climate-related policy issues, teaming up with the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and the Physics Department of the University of Malta establishing better coordination of national climate research programmes and exploring the potential for cooperation in this area within the wider regional and European fora.

Within MEPA, this project was coordinated by the Climate Change and Marine Policy Unit with assistance from the EU and Multilateral Affairs Unit.
