NESIS is a Network promoted within the ICT-Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP), running within the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP). ICT PSP aims at stimulating innovation and competitiveness through the wider uptake and best use of ICT by citizens, governments and businesses.
NESIS aims to support public authorities in addressing the problems of providing information for monitoring and reporting environmental impacts and threats. It is intended to bridge the gap between the ICT domain and the public authorities mandated to create, manage and exchange environmental information. By supporting a shared vision towards an interoperable information infrastructure, the Network fosters the creation of the Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) and a coherent frame for existing good practices.
The Network grounds on the experience of the EIONET Community, a Network of some 900 experts from over 300 environment agencies and other bodies in 38 European Countries. The Network Consortium is composed of partners from among 14 EU Member States and Associated Countries, including MEPA. Most of these partners are EIONET National Focal Points, thus guaranteeing the involvement and commitment of the SEIS main actors.
The total project budget is € 417,500, of which the budget share for MEPA is around € 20,000. This network was launched in May 2008 with a duration of 30 months. More information can be found on the network’s website.
Within MEPA, this project is being coordinated by the Information and Communication Technology Unit, with assistance from the EU & Multilateral Affairs Unit.
