National Database on Biodiversity

Chalcides_ocellatus_tiligugu_1In view of the remit and obligations set amongst others by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the national Flora, Fauna and Natural Habitats Protection Regulations, 2006 (Legal Notice 311 of 2006), the Environment Directorate has been working on the setting-up of a National Database on Biodiversity. This shall consist of an inventory of information on local species, in particular native, endemic and threatened species. It shall thus include information on species of flora and fauna that particularly contribute towards the natural and cultural heritage of the Maltese Islands. Since gaps prevail in the information available on locally important species, studies were commissioned to collate information which will feed into the database.

The National Database on Biodiversity will be made available through this webpage once it is further developed.
